This week Gaby is on the pod to talk about a deck swap we’re doing with our local friends. Like a Secret Santa, we were each given a mission, and needed to build a deck to that spec. After finishing our decks, we couldn’t help but think of what we’d do with some custom magic energy. Join us as we each design a commander, first for “Mischievous Chaos” and then for “If you’ve got the money honey i’ve got your disease”.

Topics and Tidbits
- white elephant vs secret santa
- Everyone submits a deck name/theme (e.g., Streets of Rage, Through the Fire and Flames, Grave Expectations …)
- Each deck name will then be randomly assigned to someone else to build the deck for you as a gift.
- Build a ~$50 budget Commander deck using authentic MtG cards based on your assigned deck name / theme.
- Decks should be “Bracket 1” using the Commander Bracket system, highlighting the theme provided by the deck name.
- Normal Commander deck construction rules apply except upto 10, silver border, acorn, or playtest cards may be included if you want for some holiday goofery.
- Unfinity rares… undiscovered country
- $50 doesn’t go that far for 100 cards when most cards can’t be ordered for under $.35
- Tim’s assigned theme: Mischevious Chaos
- Need a mixture of “getting ahead with surprise tricks” and “wild things happen that nobody controls”
- Locke’s mechanics are high on both mischief and chaos but the character art doesn’t totally sell that
- Locke mills along with his treasure and stealing, which provided an extra hook
- Reanimate package was too $$ expensive for this
- Locke is an Outlaw (Thunder Junction style) too
- the good goad cards are also not quite right for budget decks
- re-entering the Garfield zone by asking players to decide what a sideboard card is in commander
- un-game fun
- mischief kinda requires picking on people
- switching from dimir to izzet to get a bit more mischief and less mean
- once upon a galaxy shoutout
- do tricks have to be instant speed?
- saving the content for the pod
- “commit a crime” as a measure of mischief
- classic commander template of “when you do X, draw a card”
- copying is mischief-y
- cascade and polymorph as other cute effects
- replacing a baby with a faerie substitute
- goad branding
- still destroying things to polymorph things in 2023?
- making an enemy AND giving them incentive to punish you
- faer-ify
- it’s always the “where do the other cards go” with cascade-likes that balloons rules text
- how good is regular access to goad? high upside but also blank on some boards
- out of turn goading can be goofy to track
- obsessed vs obsession
- quasit pronunciation
- casting on opponent’s turn is a trendy faerie clause
- back to crimes
- lining up on all 2s
- tim timsplains timmy
- fantasynamegenerators.com
- Spice Jumpyming
- feeling the juliet-shaped hole in the pod
- If you’ve got the money, honey, I’ve got your disease
- poison is expensive
- turning to un for fun
- blood token fulfills the prophecy
- zooming in to inspect for blood
- hard to do 3 color mana base on $50
- what is a golgari rock star?
- tempting others into BG deals
- pivot to red green for more party??
- mixing a triggered stax-y ability with a anyone-can-use activated ability
- ramp is a fun thing to share but falls off after mid game
- impulse draw a nice riff on giving everyone the chance to draw?
- accidentally reinventing Prosper, Tome-Bound
- picking a trigger that can be built around but isn’t constant
- are cascade cards $$ expensive?
- faldorn’s weird wording “lands enter from exile” is so it works with lands that weren’t played??
- when “once per turn” doesn’t slow you down
- one axe one rose
- the engine is too engine-y, gotta get weird instead
- there’s money in the bananas
- discarding as an effect instead of as a cost
- forgetting the sac on treasure
- putting extra rules text on cards just for clarity
- anti-roxanne tech
- gaby’s submitted theme is: the wonder twins
- tim’s submitted theme is: all eyes on me
